With some of our state borders reopening airlines have been rushing to release heavily discounted flights in an effort to encourage Aussie's to travel locally and reinvigorate our economy.

Jetstar offered bargain $19 flights in mid June.

Virgin launched a '12 hour comeback sale'.

Qantas offered triple points for frequent flyer members.

If you're a little hesitant to hop on a plane just yet, there are plenty of places to explore within New South Wales itself that are only a few hours away. One such place is Mudgee.

If you've been to the Hunter Valley, then you'd love Mudgee. If you haven't been to the Hunter... you'd still love Mudgee.

Modern Day Mudgee

A comfortable three and a half hour drive from Sydney, Mudgee is the second oldest settlement west of the Blue Mountains and is a thriving wine and food producing district. If that isn't attractive enough, you'll find a strong sense of artistry in the area with one-off boutiques and homewares shops on every street in the main thoroughfare.

Where to stay

There's a place for everyone in this region.

Travelling in a group, or just want extra room to feel like home? Cottages, cabins and guesthouses can be found throughout the region all within close proximity to the vineyards and town centre.

Three caravan parks can be found just outside town for those travelling on a budget or just looking to enjoy all the outdoors that Mudgee has to offer.

There are dozens of motels and hotels around town within easy walking distance of the town centre; perfect for those looking to experience as many foodie options as possible without having to travel too far.

Wine country

Well known for it's family-owned wineries, Mudgee is home to over 50 vineyards, wineries (and distilleries and breweries). It's even home to Roths' Wine Bar, which holds the oldest operating license in NSW.

Looking for some recommendations?

Any local or tourist will tell you to visit Robert Stein Wines and I can definitely see why! We made a last minute pit stop here, and despite waiting in the cold for 10 odd minutes, it was well worth it! The wines on offer were faultless, ranging from the famous Riesling right down to the classic Shiraz. If you're keen on Tawny, they offer a 375mL bottle for $30, or a 5L bottle for $100! I lost count of everyone walking away with those 5L bottles.

Tip: Try the half-dry Riesling on offer. If you like it (which I guarantee you will), you'll love the dry Riesling that is only available for purchase, not to taste. Locals say it's one of the best in the region (limit of 2 per transaction).

Baker Williams Distillery is a must-visit for anyone who enjoys baking with alcohol, or likes to make fun cocktails with liqueurs. A half-shot of each liqueur is sure to warm you up in the cold weather we're currently experiencing. From butterscotch to lemon-barley, they have a range to please anyone's taste buds. The gin also features in most of the local pubs and restaurant.

Foodie heaven

The most important thing when I travel is where I'm going to eat. In situations that we are in today, it's essential to make prior bookings, especially for large parties. A lot of restaurants require bookings for safety reasons, and it's always better to have a guaranteed spot rather than having to wander the streets for a free table.

The first place we stopped at (apart from the house) was Our Chow Cafe next to the Burrundulla Cellar door. With a dishes ranging from hearty lunches to a quick afternoon snack, this cafe is dog and kid friendly, with outdoor seating to kick back and enjoy a glass of local wine with your meal. Looking for something more? Connected to the cafe is Mudgee Catering Co with a range of weekly meals, catering options for sweet and savoury and gift boxes.

Cade Kitchen & Bar was recommended to us by a local with the promise of good food and a dog friendly environment; essential since we were travelling with picky eaters and my lovely pup Alfie. The staff allowed us to dine in the morning we were leaving despite not having a booking and were lovely despite the obvious stressful flow of customers. Of the 7 of us that were dining, I don't think anyone was disappointed with their food. Limited choices on the menu ensures that customers aren't overwhelmed and that meals are delivered with prime care and attention. The also feature all the best of the local produce and wines of the region.
