Investing in big ticket homeware items can certainly be scary but in the long term, you save yourself time, energy and money by making these investments now, rather than filling the void with cheap items that aren't quite right.

Before investing, you should actively consider how you live, and the rooms you inhabit the most. From this you should set goals on what is most important in those rooms that will set you at ease. It's not just about what LOOK good, but what investments will make life easy and comfortable.

Also consider what can grow with you and your family, and things you will want to take with you in future moves.

Here are some of the items that people might forget to invest in when it comes to furnishing a new home, or updating a current one.

Mattress

On average we sleep an equivalent of 25 years, so a quality mattress is a MUST. There is no such thing as 'one size fits all' with a mattress, so it's important to test before you buy. Factor in body type, how you sleep (side/stomach/back) and material (foam and latex hold in body heat!). If you're sharing a bed but your preferences don't match, some companies can have each side customised to the sleeper.

Bedding

Purchasing quality and comfortable pillows goes a long way to ensure a good nights sleep. Consider pillow filling (bamboo, cotton, memory foam etc), firmness and how you sleep. When buying linen, consider different material depending on the season (or cotton all-year-round if you're a hot sleeper like me), and the 'make-up' of duvets. Some trap heat in and are great for winter (down), and fabrics like silk are great for people with sensitive skin or allergies.

Vacuum

A hardworking vacuum is worth its weight in gold. Look around; speak to professionals about reputable brands and best-suited models.

Do you need something lightweight? Do you have pets? Are you cleaning multiple types of flooring?

Would you prefer a robot that can do it for you? There so so many options to consider depending on your budget, lifestyle and the space you have to cover.

Coffee Machine/Kettle

Depending on what you prefer to drink, investing in one or both of these machines is a good idea.

For coffee lovers, it can be a massive money saver if you make your own coffee at home. Invest in a machine that is compatible with your lifestyle; some machines like Nespresso and Keurig are reputable pod machines for easy drinkers. Machines like the Sunbeam EM7100 Cafe Series Espresso Machine + Capsule suits households with different preferences.

For tea lovers, in my experience it's always best to splurge a little on a kettle. They last longer, generally look nicer and don't build up limescale (trust me, it makes. HUGE different.)
